Reviewers, people copied and inviting someone
Bring in someone who reviews without signing, like the customer's lawyer; who sees what; and how the conversation keeps everyone posted.

Contracts are rarely read by the signer alone. A lawyer checks the terms, a colleague checks the numbers. Instead of forwarding emails, add them to the document as a reviewer: they get their own link, comment and suggest edits on the page, and never hold up signing.
Who can do what
Everyone on a document sees the whole conversation: questions, replies and suggested edits. Internal notes stay with your team.
| Signer | Reviewer | Gets a copy | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reads the document while it's out | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Comments and replies | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Suggests edits and requests changes | Until they sign | Yes | No |
| Invites someone to review | Yes | Yes | No |
| Signs | Yes | No | No |
| Gets the signed copy | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Needs a seat | No | No | No |
- Reviewers don't count toward signed, aren't given fields, and signing in order never waits for them. The document completes when every signer has signed.
- People copied now get their own link as soon as the document is sent, so they can follow along and comment. Documents that were already out before this change aren't emailed again: their people copied still get the signed copy at the end, and Copy link on their card gives you their link.
- On your side, replying and deciding on changes still needs a seat; reading and internal notes don't. See Seats.
Add a reviewer
Before sending: in the editor's Signers tab, add the person and choose Reviews on their card (the choices are Signs, Reviews and Gets copy). In Send for signature their row says Reviewer. They get their link when the document is sent.
After sending: open the document from Documents. Under Recipients, choose Add reviewer (it's also next to People on this document in Questions & changes).
- Choose Reviewer, or Gets a copy for someone who only follows along.
- Enter their Full name and Email, and their Company and Title if you like.
- Choose Add reviewer. They're emailed their own link right away: *You've been asked to review* the document, in your signers' language.
- Copy link, Remind (at most once an hour, like signers), Change (a new email gets a new link) and Remove (their link stops working at once; what they wrote stays) are on each reviewer's card.
- A document can have up to 20 reviewers. Someone already on it can't be added twice.
- Reviewers don't get access codes: their link is their own, emailed to them.
- Activity and the certificate record who added them and when. The certificate lists reviewers in their own section; their suggested edits and the invitations are in the audit trail.
- From ChatGPT or Claude (the Tally Sign card's connection),
set_recipientstakestype: "reviewer". The REST API takestypeonrecipientswhen creating a document, andPOST /documents/{id}/recipientsadds a reviewer or CC to a sent one. See the API docs.
What a reviewer sees
Their link opens the document with You're reviewing this document: they don't need to sign. Comment and Suggest a change are right there, and choosing one asks them to pick the paragraph.
Their suggested edits work like a signer's: the change is marked up for everyone, and you Accept, Edit and accept or Decline it. The signers see it on their page with a Reviewer badge, and can reply to it.
When you accept an edit, reviewers are emailed that the new version is ready, and they keep their link. Signers sign the new version; reviewers never need to.
Customers can invite someone to review
A signer or reviewer can bring in someone themselves, such as their lawyer, without asking you first.
- On the signing page, they open the menu (three dots) at the top right and choose Invite someone to review, or choose Invite in Questions & changes.
- They enter the person's name and email, and an optional note.
- They choose Send invite. The new reviewer is emailed their own link, with the note, and appears under People on this document as *Invited by* them.
- You're emailed who was invited and by whom (it counts as a question or change request in Settings → Profile → Email updates). Documents sent from Salesforce also ring the sender's bell there.
- Each person can invite up to 5 people a day, and a document takes up to 15 invitations a day and 20 reviewers in all. Someone already on the document can't be invited again.
- Invited reviewers don't get an access code, even when the person inviting them has one: the person inviting vouches for them. If that isn't right, choose Remove on their card.
- People copied can't invite anyone, and neither can your own company's signers (add reviewers from the document page instead).
- To keep a document to the people you chose, turn off People on it can invite a reviewer in the Signers tab (next to Signers can assign it to someone else) or in Send for signature. It's on unless you turn it off.
Who's emailed about the conversation
| When | Who gets an email |
|---|---|
| Someone on the document comments, replies or suggests a change | Your team, as before (you can turn these off in Settings → Profile). |
| Someone on the document replies in a conversation | The other people on the document who took part in that conversation (wrote in it, or proposed the change it's about). |
| Your team sends a message | Everyone in that conversation, or everyone on the document for a new message. |
| A suggested edit is accepted | Signers (to sign the new version) and reviewers (to look at it). |
- People on the document get at most one email per document every 10 minutes: replies that come in meanwhile go together in the next one. Each email opens the page on that conversation.
- Nobody is emailed once the document is signed, voided or expired, or after they declined. A signer whose turn hasn't come yet in a signing order isn't emailed until it has.
- Emails go out in each person's language, with your company's branding. Replies to them come to the sender, never to the other customers: people on a document don't see each other's email addresses.
